Description
For sale is my 1959 Carl Zeiss Photomicroscope 1 in excellent optical, cosmetic, and mechanical condition. I am the second owner of this microscope which was used in the Pathology Lab at the Harbor View Medical Center in Washington. I’ve owned the microscope for about 15 years. Unlike so many Zeiss microscopes on Ebay that are pulled from a closet somewhere, bought from an auction, and listed as is, this one has been cleaned and cared for and is ready to go to work. I’ve been buying and selling microscopes regularly for the last 20 years, specializing in the Zeiss Standard Series microscopes. This has been my main microscope and I’m selling it to pursue other interests. While the frame, stage and condenser carriers, tube head, optivar, and camera insert are all original, all of the contrast techniques, objectives and other accessories represent the best of the best that I was able to cull out of many purchases and sales of microscopes over the last 20 years. I would love it if this went to a good home so I’m selling it as a complete setup. Also, no shipping. Pick up only. Here's what’s included:
Photomicroscope 1 – The gray finish has only a few minor wear through spots. For those of you who love these old gray/black models, you’ll know that the gray finish is often worn through. The tube head and Optivar are the earlier (pre-1960) version that has the corrector lens in the accessory slider, not the objective carrier. Let me say at this point that there is some minor delamination in the POL analyzer which does not affect the image. That’s also the only piece of this microscope that has any delamination, and I just haven’t been able to find a replacement as this earlier system was only made from 1955-1959. Anyway, the tube head slider and Optivar w/focusable Bertrand lens work great with smooth motion and positive click stops. If you are new to this older system, it is actually well suited to POL microscopy because the accessory slider hole has a collar that twists to cover the opening for the wave plates rather than the later version which uses a plug. The condenser carrier and stage carrier are perfect and focuser are perfect. The stage is the graduated circular stage for use in PLM. Both of the field diaphragms work perfectly. The mirror that switched between reflected and transmitted light works perfectly. Regarding the camera. All controls work perfectly and I have periodically run some film through it. I actually took a set of calibration photos that I will include if I can find them. You will notice a bit of dust on the optics that are visable in the view screen when the tube head is set to take pictures, but it does not come through on the film. The primary controller is in excellent condition and functions perfectly and there is a spare controller included that is also fully functional, both with power cords
· Manuals – I have two different PM1 manuals that I will include along with a 8.5.11 photocopy of one of them. There is also a marketing brochure and the calibration supplement, all you in great shape.
· EPI DIC Illuminator – There is a an EPI illuminator in excellent condition that includes a 4x EPI DIC objective along with the secondary POL analyzer. No delamination or issues with any of the optics, prisms or the reflected light analyzer. The image is amazing in reflected light DIC.
· Phase Contrast – Includes a beautiful set of Zeiss Neofluar phase contrast objectives 16x Ph2, 40x Ph2, and 100x Ph3. These are a matched set and are in excellent condition optically and cosmetically. There is also a Phako IVZ, .32/.63 which is smooth with no delaminated annuli or optical issues.
· Brightfield objectives – 2.5 Plan Achromatic, 6.3x .20 Neofluar, 10x .32 Plan Apo, 25x .65 Plan Apo, 40x .95 Plan Apo (non-oil version). The bright field condenser is the 1.3 strain free POL version.
· PLM – There is a polarizer below the stage which when combined with the tube analyser gives excellent PLM results. All of the objectives above have been used for PLM and while not officially labeled as “strain free”, give excellent results. Included are a 1/4 wave mica, a quartz sensitive tint slider by Vickers and a Zeiss .546 Glimmer.
· Filters - blue for incandescent correction, green, orange, and ND. Also an eyepiece reticle.
· Eyepieces - the original 10x wide field plus a set of c8, a set of 10x POL with reticle and a 6.3FK for the photo tube
· Other accessories - there’s a fully functional newer version tube head if you want to use accessories made from 1960 until the end of the PM era - fully functional with no optical or mechanical issues. There’s a camera/view port that does not have the film carrier but is great as a viewing screen. Photo tube with zeiss shutter and cable release. Some other incidental items as pictured.
