It was supposed to be fit on appropriate Zeiss oculars for polarization imaging, together with the polarizer on the filter carrier and the wave plates.

“This polarizer was actually intended to rest on top of the ocular (the wider recess fits certain oculars in the KPL series). There is a second deeper recess that is meant to accept one of two different compensator plates (first order red - gips; or a quarter-wave plate - glimmer). These had a small flat handle that protruded through the gap in the flange so the compensator could be rotated through a bit more than 90 degrees. You sometimes see the entire set in a nice small wooden cabinet holding this analyzer, a polarizer that would drop into the filter carrier, and the two waveplates with handles.”
