~ Awanyu Symbol ~
Hello and welcome! This is your opportunity to add an amazing piece of Teresita Naranjo, Santa Clara pottery to your collection.
Teresita Naranjo was considered one of the finest of the 20th Century potters of the Santa Clara Pueblo. She was considered the first to carve outside of the linear band designs.
My parents purchased this piece of pottery from her on their travels throughout the Southwest in the mid 1950's.
I'm currently looking through their travel scrapbooks to see if I can find the exact date they purchased this piece, but they always talked about having gotten this during that specific trip.
[Fun Fact and Funny Story - My father was a teacher, and took advantage of summers to travel. Favorite story of this trip - my mother was driving because my father was exhausted... they were travelling and pulling an old Airstream. She looked out the window to see a tire rolling past the car going faster than she was driving, in the opposite lane. (Yes, she was one of those little old lady drivers, even in her 30's.) She pretty much screamed, nearly gave my father a heart attack, and quickly pulled over. Sure enough, the trailer had lost a tire, and the axel was so hot it almost caught fire...]
Back to the piece, though. This is a gorgeous piece, measuring about 5-1/4" wide by a bit over 3" tall. The opening at the top is about 3" across.
The carving is crisp and clean. It depicts an Avanyu or Awanyu with the arrow tongue. It truly is spectacular, and I've tried to show the photos of each section.
You can see the signature on the bottom. You can also see where my parents had "earthquake tape" and some wax residue. They lived in Southern California, and wanted to make certain it didn't get damaged in an earthquake (of which there were many while they had this piece on display).
