Santa Clara Indian Art Pottery Laura Tafoya Bowl Vase Avanyu Water Serpent

Being offered is a piece of Santa Clara Pueblo Indian art pottery.  It is signed by the artisan, Laura Tafoya on the bottom.  The bowl is the classic black on black finish with an
Avanyu water serpent as the design encircling the bowl.  The bowl is in good condition with no apparent damage or signs of wearing.  Approx. 1 1/4" tall by 2 9/16" wide at its widest portion.

The Avanyu symbol is the water serpent deity of the Pueblo tribes of Arizona and New Mexico, often depicted on San Ildefonso and Santa Clara Pueblo pottery. The Avanyu symbolizes the importance of water to indigenous desert cultures. This symbol is also associated with lightning as shown by the serpent’s tongue.
The Avanyu symbol is the storm bringer and connected with lightning, thunderstorms and the guardian of water."
Born in either 1946 or 1949, Laura Tafoya Pino is known for her carved and polished blackware. She learned to make pottery from both her mother Madeline Tafoya and her aunt Madeline Naranjo.  Laura began to make pottery with serious intent in 1979. According to the Schaaf book listing Santa Clara potters, she won a first with her jar and a bowl in Indian Market in Santa Fe in 1988.
