Description
Baltic porters are the “biggest” porters around. In some ways, a Baltic porter is an Imperialized version of an English porter, with a higher alcohol content and complex flavors with more sweetness and malty richness and less roastiness. Deep and dark, this beer will fit every mood but is especially wonderful in the winter as a treat to be sipped in front of a crackling fire. A Baltic porter is traditionally a lager, so lager yeast is the best option if you can ferment at or around 50 degrees. If not, a “clean” hybrid lager/ale yeast is recommended but it should still be fermented cool (60-62 degrees). This beer can benefit from aging to mellow the alcohol bite.Due to the high starting gravity, we suggest that you make a starter or purchase two packages of yeast
All orders ship with a pack of dry yeast.
Style Overview:
Originally created to be exported across the North Sea to the Baltic Trade, the Baltic Porter gets its roots from the English Porter. Unlike its sister porters, the Baltic was gradually transformed into a bottom-fermenting lager, as present tradition dictates. Strong, roasty, and hearty, the Baltic Porter clocks in at around 7-10%, making it a perfect treat for sitting around the fire
