With StudCount you will know within minutes if your stud dog’s sperm count and motile sperm is within the normal range. StudCount ~ was specifically developed for breeders and/or veterinary practitioners.
StudCount’s evaluation test is more effective in assessing your stud dog’s fertility than the standard canine semen analysis which cannot evaluate functional competence of the sperm.
Your stud dog may have 100 million/ml sperm, but if the motility is 0% then the StudCount results will read negative. A key element to your stud dog’s fertility is the number of motile (live) sperm. Stud Count’s ability to differentiate motile from non-motile sperm is a unique feature of this kit.

DECLINE IN DOGS SPERM QUALITY
Professor Allan Pacey, Professor of Andrology at the University of Sheffield, said:
"This is an interesting study which suggests that the sperm quality in a population of dogs enrolled in a breeding program in the UK may have declined over a 26-year period, in a manner which mimics what others have claimed may have happened in the human male over the last century."
How does StudCount~ Work?
To perform the test, you will mix the stud dogs semen with a detergent-containing substance., called regent, which is readily reduced – a specific chemical reaction involving transfer of electrons – by motile sperm. Following a reaction with the enzymes from metabolically active cells, StudCount is reduced in color depending on the sperm concentration. The reduction happens faster if the number of the sperm are high. The information from this single test is equal in data of four advanced tests that costs (0 - ,200 depending on your veterinarian) hundreds of dollars.
StudCount is a 94% positive predictor for semen samples containing 300 million or more motile sperm per ejaculate. An 88% negative predictor for semen samples with low fertility potential. Thus, Stud Count is a highly effective screening test for your stud’s fertility potential, and the only on-site test to measure motile sperm.
How to use StudCount~ a canine Sperm quality test?
An example of the recommended testing process would be:
1. Use the supplied temperature gauge stick it on a disposable plastic glass.
2. Fill the plastic glass three fourths full of 98 degrees water (hot tap water will work check the temperature). This is important step you need to keep the sperm alive during the test.
3. Collect your stud dog’s fresh Sperm Sample. Only collect the sperm rich fraction.
4. Invert the test tube with the semen sample 3-5 times to get an even sample. Remove any excess sperm from the sample and only test 3 ml of the sample.
5. Place six drops of the regent in the sperm sample. The sample will turn Blue-Purple!
6. Place the centrifuge tube with the sample into the warm bath and maintain the water bath at 98 degrees during the entire testing process.
7. Wait 15 minutes for the testing to be complete. Please refer to the color chart for testing result.
8. After the test is complete dispose of the entire contents. Do not touch the regent.
Semen volume collected as a rule of thumb:
• A Dog < 10 lb should produce 1.5-3 ml of semen
• A Dog < 50 lb should produce 3-5 ml of semen
• A dog > 50 lb should produce 5-8 ml of semen
To ensure that your StudCount Canine Sperm quality tests correctly it is important, that the regent not be exposed to moisture or sunlight. Please also be aware that it is important that you do not touch the regent as it can in rare cases cause skin irritation. The StudCount Canine Sperm quality test has a limited validity. Proper storage extends this. Once opened the StudCount an Canine Sperm quality test are good for approximately 1 year. This is not guaranteed.
Interpreting the Results:
Positive: Means your stud dog has a minimum of 300 million sperm per ejaculate. In addition, your stud dog’s motility (live) sperm are within normal limits.
Negative: Means your stud dog has less than 300 million sperm per ejaculate OR the motility (live) sperm has low fertility potential. This sperm has a lower chance of producing a pregnancy. If your stud dog’s test comes back negative it is recommended to re- test in 72 hours. If after the second test the results are negative, please seek a fertility veterinarian’s expertise.
